Eli Lilly and Co. and Icos Corp. said their male impotence drug Cialis also shows promise in easing urinary problems from benign enlargement of the prostate in men.
A study showed 'statistically significant improvement' in male patients with the prostate problem who took the drug, Lilly and Icos announced today.

The trial last 12 weeks and involved asking patients questions about urinary problems, such as difficulty to urinate and frequent urination, that they experienced while taking Cialis.
The prostate gland typically enlarges as men age, often causing urinary problems. More than 50 percent of men over 50 have urinary problems caused by prostate enlargement.
'We are delighted with the outcome of this study,' Paul Clark, president of Bothell, Wash.-based Icos, said in a statement. He said investing in a drug to treat the common prostate problem 'makes a great deal of sense for Lilly-Icos.'

Pfizer gets OK for drug using Viagra ingredient

Pfizer Inc. said Friday that it received approval from European regulators for a drug using the active ingredient in Viagra to treat a life-threatening vascular disease.

Manhattan-based Pfizer was approved to market sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra, as a treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension -- a blood disorder of the lungs which causes high blood pressure in the arteries that carry blood from the heart to the lungs. If left untreated, the lack of oxygen-rich blood could eventually lead to death.
